How the CSRD and ESPR regulations of the European Green Deal will disrupt industrial practices in the USA by revealing the real challenges of the ecological transition

Speakers:
Christophe Girardier – Glimpact CEO and Co-founder
JR Beaudoin – Theodo CTO

Event Summary:

Even after the difficult political situation in the European Union resulting from the elections of June 2024, the EU recently adopted two new major pieces of legislation in the framework of the European Green Deal: the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) for extra financial reporting, and the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) regarding the eco-conception of products. These two pieces of legislation are obligatory and will dramatically change first the vision of the stakes of the environmental crisis, which has been limited to only climate change but is now extended to include the nine planetary boundaries, and second the existing practices of all industrial players who operate in the European market, consequently affecting businesses in the US and around the world.

These two pieces of legislation are based around the same unique methodological framework, which is the Product/Organization Environmental Footprint (PEF/OEF) Method, to define and evaluate environmental footprint of a product and/or organization. The PEF/OEF method takes into account 16 impact categories of human activity on the planet, which are measured across all stages of a product’s lifecycle through precise characterization methods for each impact category. Through this method the impact in each of these 16 categories is normalized and weighted, then aggregated to determine a single global environmental impact score of a product or organization. This systemic vision of environmental footprint radically changes our vision of the reality of the stakes of the environmental crisis, and consequently the ecological transition of all industrial players.

The webinar will cover these major topics:

- CSRD and ESPR: the two major pieces of legislation adopted by the EU in the framework of the European Green Deal.
- The PEF/OEF method, the reference framework of CSRD and ESPR, which, by taking into account 16 categories of human impact on the planet, represents a new paradigm in the reality of environmental footprint.
- The application of the PEF method to evaluate, analyze and reduce environmental footprint of products via business cases in the fashion, agri/food, and media industries.
- The application of the OEF method to evaluate, analyze and reduce environmental footprint of organizations, through a detailed model of scope 3, via business cases in the fashion and agri/food industries
- How to approach the challenge of data collection when implementing the PEF and OEF method through an innovative approach on information systems
- Q&A

Event Description:

Through this seminar, we aim to answer the following questions:

- How will these two legislation will change industrial practices in the US and abroad?
- How does the PEF/OEF method reveal the true explanatory factors of environmental footprint of products and organizations?
- How can this systemic vision of environmental footprint allow for the identification of key action leverage to reduce environmental impact through a robust eco-design approach?
- What can this approach do, through innovative technology, to model the environmental impacts from scope 3 at a disaggregated and understandable level?
- How can this new vision and methodological framework affect the strategic plan of US companies to reduce their global environmental footprint?
- How do these pieces of legislation redefine the stakes of the ecological transition in a wholistic way that captures the reality of the environmental crisis?

In this webinar, we will illustrate how to handle these new paradigms. The business cases will present how this methodological framework can evaluate the environmental footprint of product and organization, analyze the key explanatory factors, identify the key action leverage, undertake eco-design approach at product level, and define credible sustainability strategy at company level. We will also focus on dealing with the challenges collecting the necessary data in order to implement this framework, through an innovative approach of information systems.
